JC VS POLY
I guess many people do not understand and can't get over the question: why polytechnic students are paying a higher transportation fare than JC students? Today, I'm going to bring you through the business perspectives and a series of analytical examples and hopefully, able to clear your doubts.
It is because polytechnic students start lesson everyday at different timing and later than JC students. In other words, they have more flexible timetable. In economic term, it is called elasticity. Elasticity is defined as the measure of the responsiveness of demand and supply of a good or service to an increase or decrease in its price. To relate back to the topic, it is how polytechnic and JC students react/respond to the increase in the transportation fare.
They definitely will react differently. Let's start off by discussing about JC students. They start school everyday at a fixed time, 7.30am. If there is an increase in the bus fare, they will resort to other substitutes to get to school. For example, get their parents to give them a ride right before they go to work. Another example will be meeting friends, take cab together and share the cost. Since it is a fixed timing everyday, it is easy to do so and it is also a cheaper substitute. Thus, by keeping the transportation fees low, JC students will still continue to take the public transport to school.
On the other hand, should there be an increase in the bus fare, polytechnic students will be inflexible and not able to respond in finding other means of transport to go to school. Because they all start lessons at 9am or even later, they can't possibly ask their parents for a ride since they surely will be late for work. This means that polytechnic students have no other substitutes to resort to and got no other choices rather than the public transport, causing them to be heavily reliant on it. Thus, even SMRT increase the mrt fares and SBS increase the bus fares, polytechnic students will still continue to take the public transport.
In conclusion,
Poly students are less elastic -> no substitutes -> price increase
JC students are more elastic -> have substitutes -> price decrease
After reading this,
Have you accepted?
Are you convinced?
Or are you still complaining over it?
