A small thought that makes a difference

I've learnt something meaningful last week in capstone class which I think is an essential component when working in groups and it also applies to situations where we are interacting with our friends.

Emotional intelligence: it is about understanding the feeling of each individual in the group and having empathy for them. It is also about saying thank you to one another and engaging quiet people in expressing their thoughts instead of making them uncomfortable by questioning why are they keeping in silence.

People who are loud and outspoken might not necessarily come out with the best ideas nor are they best at getting things done appropriately. Conversely, quiet people might be the ones generating quality ideas. They tend to arrange their thoughts before putting into words and sharing with peers.

I feel that the habit of showing empathy to others is a virtue. We must understand the differences in each individual and show respect by not doing things that might easily cause them in unease situations.

University Life

Hello! I was reading Yunis' blog post on her last week of semester in school and I'm inspired to write one too. I realised I didn't mention anything about school on my blog ever since I entered Curtin. Tonight, I shall archive my uni moments on my blog. Let's go~

I still remember my first lesson in Curtin was Advertising Account Planning class taken by Jason. I was feeling a little unease back then especially during the first week of school as it was a whole new start with  new environment and unfamiliar faces. I guess I was sitting at the right place during my first lesson that led me to know two of my closest friends in school. As I've got exemptions for many modules which led me to advancement to 200 and 300 mods (basic mods are 100 mods), I had to adapt to the academic curriculum more quickly than the other freshmen. The thing about 200 and 300 mods is that most of the people in the classes already have their own clique or rather people that they know, so I was in a difficult position be it forming project group or by any chance having a close acquaintance who is willing to guide the new student (me). Fortunately, the people that I met during my first semester are kind enough to guide and help me whenever I was in doubt after knowing that I was a freshie back then (teary eyes*) haahhaha.

Some of the hilarious things that happened in semester 1:

#1
During the first lesson of Brand Management class, I entered the classroom with big and bright eyes wanting to look for potential group members hahhaha. I was sitting at the last row and haven't seen any kind-looking solo people at sight. After observing for a while...one long hair girl sitting alone spotted *DINGDING*. Without second thoughts, I shamelessly moved my things and went infront to sit near her. I didn't sit right beside her but leaving an empty seat in between us hoping that she will not feel intimidated by the desperate me and willing to accept me with open arms hahahahah. After 15 minutes progression into lesson, a guy walked in and the girl beside me waved to him siao liaoooooooooo. That was the moment I thought that I caused myself into trouble again. So the guy awkwardly squeezed pass me and sit in between the girl and I. Then...tadaaaaaaaa...awkward silence...ok nvm then I told myself that later I'll shamelessly ask them to accept me as part of their group. After a few minutes...another guy came in and they waved to him again OMGGGGGG was anyone in the same situation as me before. Totally TROLLED. So the guy went to sit right beside me on my left (sitting position: Friend 1...Me...Friend 2...Friend 3). haahahahhaah that feeling....hoping that there was a hole on the floor for me to hide...Well...then I started apologising to them saying that I didn't know they were coming and shamelessly took their seats. But they were so nice and said that it's ok and willing to accept me into their group muahahahah.

#2
During my first assignment submission, I actually asked my members question like "does Turnitin read photos? (whether the system is able to accept the images in my report)" lololol

#3
There was a time, I had lunch with one of my group members at Whampoa food centre which is near school. He ordered just the chicken breast from the chicken rice store. Hai then I was so big mouth that I asked him "are you on diet?". Then I witnessed the change of expression in his face, just nodded once without saying anything. Oops I think I said the wrong thing. Thereafter, he didn't ask me along for lunch already hahhaah.  Coincidentally during on of the lessons, the lecturer mentioned that guys are sensitive to hear the word "diet". He said the right word to use is "body building". Well...now I know...

During the first half of advertising classes, I really like it and find it interesting. It was only in the second half of the curriculum that I felt a little demoralised over advertising modules. The thing about advertising is that you need to be really creative and think out of the box. It is easy to pass but really difficult to score well. Also, it is somewhat competitive as all of us want to produce the best idea. You will think that your idea is marvellous and will work well but after consulting the lecturer, you will find out that your idea is actually lacking a lot and is no difference from other typical ideas which everyone can come out with. That is the most demoralising part where you had to refine your idea after hearing the comments while competing with the limited time left before submission. Well...this is just the process. I am willing to accept it with open arms so as to train myself for the better future muahaha.

First semester passed in a blink of eye. Basically, first 3 weeks we got nothing much to do...I mean no assignments due, just attending lessons and kind of still not in the situation. Then week 4 - 6 will be rushing for individual assignments and mid-sem tests. Week 7 - 8 kind of laid off thinking that group assignments deadlines are still far away but actually no. Week 9 - 12 busy with group assignments and presentations. Then examssssss.

I've just completed my semester 2 exams woohooooooooo~ Semester 2 was ok except the fact that I felt kind of demoralised for one of the modules particularly because of an anal lecturer. I felt unjust thinking that why is there such lecturer in an university. All lecturers in Curtin are good...I just feel unhappy about this particular one. Well, I'm super glad that I've conquered that module and don't have to see that black face anymore.

Now...pictures time~
